In the macho world of mariachi, female musicians are rare, and the brave women who try to make a living at it must also fulfill their traditional roles of wife and mother. Against the backdrop of Mexico City’s Day of the Dead celebration, Que Caramba es la Vida accompanies several women—including members of the first all-female mariachi band—to their performances and throughout their daily lives. Their personal stories provide a unique background that gives depth to their passionate songs about death, love, and poverty.
